Most children today are addicted to computer games. This makes most of our youth grow up overweight. Moreover, since computer games do not allow the child to interact with other people, his or her social skills are not given a chance to develop sufficiently. As responsible parents, we must find ways to teach our children about how to have fun, keep fit, and be sociable, all at the same time.

The answer: the traditional Philippine children’s game called “Tumbang Preso”.

Tumbang preso is a combination of the game “tag” and’ target shooting, albeit of the wholesome sort. Tumbang preso is designed for groups of 3 or more players. The players will need some chalk to mark the ground, an empty tin can, and rubber flip-flop slippers.

There will be two small areas in the field:

A circle with a radius of about 12 inches. This is the area where the empty tin can will be placed. By drawing lots, one of the players will be chosen as the “guardian” of the tin can.
A 3 ft. by 6 ft. rectangular area which is about 10 to 15 feet away from the circle. The rest of the players, called the “attackers”, will be staying in this “safety zone” while holding one rubber slipper each.

The objective of the game is for the attackers to topple the tin can by targeting it with their slippers. Once an attacker has hurled his slipper, he has to retrieve it and then go back to the safety zone.

This cycle happens over and over until the player gets tagged by the guardian. The guardian can tag anyone outside the rectangular safety zone, as long as the tin can is upright and inside the circle.

If the tin can fell over, the guardian must first put the can inside the circle before he can tag anyone else. As soon as he tags an attacker, they will then switch places – the attacker becomes the new guardian, and the old guardian joins the siege team.

This is a never-ending game, and the only limit to this is your child’s physical endurance.
